Hong Kong is located in the northern hemisphere temperature zone, and the red tide rarely occurs in its waters in the past. However, due to the increased environmental pollution in recent years, the continuous occurrence of red tides in the waters off Hong Kong’s coast has seriously affected the livelihoods of fishers in Hong Kong. The first red tide in Hong Kong occurred in 1971 and over seven more occurred in the next five years. Since 1980, the number of red tides has rapidly increased. A red tide in the summer of 1986 killed 120 tons of fish. The harmful effects of red tides have spread to some important fish farming areas in Hong Kong.
