厚朴为木兰科植物厚朴Magnolia officinalis Rehd.et Wils及凹叶厚朴Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils var. biloba的干皮、根皮和枝皮,在商品中,厚朴主要分为川朴和温朴两大类:川朴主产于大巴山山脉、武陵山山脉的四川、湖北、陕西、贵州、湖南等省;温朴产于武夷山山脉的浙江、福建、江西等省。川朴质量好,温朴产量大。川朴中以湖北恩施的产品质量最佳,习称“紫油厚朴”,其特点是皮细肉厚,油性大,香味浓;
