Sunday, August 10, 1947 The next day, I was working well. Then on the train to Elsense, Denmark; Hamlet’s castle, very beautiful, green roof, gray stone, Renaissance building, no mention of Shakespeare. Take the ferry across the bay and disembark at Helsingborg (Sweden). Encounter ridiculous embarrassing thing here. Logically Sartre received a remittance from a Swedish businessman at the Grand Hotel, but the money did not arrive. We are penniless, nor do we have an empty room in the city. Sartre borrowed money from the French consul, but not yet a real consul. He was an old Swedish son and he had never heard of any Sartre and refused to lend him money. We called Stockholm, and it was not easy to get through. There was a little anxious. The concierge told us he had a room, but Sartre was at least real Sartre. Several journalists came and lifted the camera to fire at us. There was also a French flag on our table, but we still had no money in our pockets and did not know where to go. The next day the money finally arrived. When newspapers published a large picture of Sartre, the consul also dialed and apologized with trepidation and took the initiative to borrow money from us. For us, this is nothing new, together with Sartre, in a remote country, often without a child in his pocket. In the end, it is also properly settled.
