Drill pressure thrusters produce a weight-on-bit from the hydraulic pressure of the drilling fluid. When the pump is on, the WOB push-off device separates the bottom hole assembly from the rest of the drill string to provide a constant, controlled weight-on-bit that reduces axial vibration and shock. More than 120 applications have proven that the weight-push thruster has a very large ability to improve drilling performance in boreholes that involve vibration or impact problems. This technique has been used to increase ROP and bit life, improve construction conditions and reduce downhole accidents in both horizontal and vertical wells in boreholes 12 to 37 inches in diameter and up to 5400 meters of well depth. The system is used not only on stationary rigs but also on floating rigs, dramatically reducing the cost per foot. This paper describes the functions and principles of WOB push-pushrs, explains the possibilities and constraints of using them, discusses in detail the guidelines for optimizing WOB push-pushrs for some applications, and provides four geo- Well detailed on-site application data.
