Preface Many Australian Defense Force (AFF) crews use plug-in earbuds to enhance the noise attenuation capabilities of their helmets. A new plug-in earbud was referenced by the ADF and a few months later crew complained about new earbuds being inferior to the original device. We conducted a study comparing the noise attenuation of the new and old plug-in earbuds on the RAAF PC-9 / A aircraft with the HGU-55P helmet. Method The actual ear noise attenuation performance is determined by the different combinations of earplugs and helmets. A soundproof compartment and a standardized method (Australian Standard AS1270) are used. PC-9 / A was measured using a hand-operated phonometer
