For the seventh year in a row, the International Foundation for Traditional Economic Research has named Hong Kong the freest region in the world economy. The report shows that the public expenditure on the Hong Kong government has risen, but the drop in inflation has made Hong Kong the top one. On January 1, the Heritage Foundation published the results of the 2001 Free Economic Assessment prepared by the association and the Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong. Hong Kong took the second place with a score of 1.30 in 161 re-rated countries and regions. The Foundation scored an overall score of ten, with Hong Kong ranking top in seven of these sectors, including trade and financial policy, foreign investment, banking and the economy. The foundation pointed out that despite the increase in public spending by the Hong Kong government, the fall in inflation helped Hong Kong’s index score tops the list.
