The present invention relates to an image sensor having a pulsed mode of operation. An image sensor includes a pixel array having a plurality of pixels. The readout circuitry is coupled to the pixel array, the controller circuitry is coupled to control the pixel array and to the readout circuitry to receive the array data from the pixel array. The controller circuit includes a mode control logic unit that provides logic that when executed causes the image sensor to operate in an idle mode of operation and then samples the array data received from the pixel array in response to receiving the event signal in a pulsed mode of operation. The pattern in the array data sample over time is identified and the mode of operation is selected in response to the identified pattern.
