鄂州市光荣院建立于1983年,主要是供养参加过抗日战争、解放战争、抗美援朝战争的老战士、军烈属和孤寡老人及弃婴。从建院之初,张明利就在院里工作,他把自己生命中最美好的时光奉献给了光荣院的老人和孤残儿童。他关照护理过的老人达2000余人,他为60多位孤寡老人尽孝送终,他还将院里收养的残疾弃婴领到家中抚养。他36次被评为省级、市级先进个人,曾荣获全省民政系统先进工作者、省级基层民政窗口单位服务明星,全市优秀共产党员、首届孝亲敬老服务明星,市劳动模范等荣誉称号。
