Objective: To observe the expression of transforming growth factor (TGF)β in gastric cancer cells and to explore the possible role of TGFβ in the development of gastric cancer. Methods: Forty-two cases of gastric cancer were confirmed by gastroscope biopsy and pathological examination. In 44 cases of superficial gastritis biopsies, TGFβ1 and β2 were detected by immunocytochemical method-SP method, and the expression intensity was expressed in grades (weak-strong, followed by -, ±, +, ++, +++). Results: In 42 patients with gastric cancer, there was no strong positive (+++), moderate positive (++) in 1 case, low positive (+) in 10 cases, suspicious positive (±) in 3 cases, and negative (-) in 28 cases. The positive rate was 26.2%. TGFβ2 was strongly positive (+++) in 5 patients, moderately positive (++) in 16 patients, low-positive (+) in 13 patients, suspicious positive (±) in 2 patients, and negative (-) in 6 patients; the positive rate was 81.0%. In 44 patients with superficial gastritis, there was no positive TGFβ1 (+~+++), four suspected positive (±), and negative (-) 40 patients. There was no moderate positive and strong positive TGFβ2 (++~+++), low positive (+) 10 patients, suspicious positive (±) 1 patient, and negative (−) 33 patients; the positive rate was 22.7%. The positive rates of TGFβ1 and β2 in patients with gastric cancer were significantly higher than those in superficial gastritis, and the positive rate of TGFβ2 was higher in gastric cancer than in TGFβ1. CONCLUSIONS: The increased expression of TGFβ1, especially TGFβ2, is a hallmark of the malignant evolution of gastric cancer.
