4月24日上午,我正在打点行装,准备赴美国参加国际会议,接到费孝通教授家人打来的电话,要我们尽快赶到医院。我当时心里一沉,不祥的预感笼罩心头。我与爱人匆匆驾车赶到北京医院。费孝通先生住院已经一年有余,一年来,我自己国内外穿梭,一直想去看看先生,有时是医院不允许,有时是自己的时间错不开,所以一直没有如愿。赶到医院,先生的秘书张荣华老师先把我们叫到隔壁房间,介绍了情况,然后我们来到病房。先生已经处于昏迷状态,我们摸着先生的手,手指肿得很厉害,指尖很凉。我们心里企盼先生能够很快恢复过来。
