科学技术的发展一方面促进了乒乓球运动的起源和普及,为乒乓球运动提供了相关的理论基础,提供了更加精良的运动工具,促进了乒乓球技术的飞速提高;但另一方面科学技术的发展又在一定程度上制约着乒乓球运动的发展,主要体现在为了满足人类由于科技发展带来的更高的观赏要求,不得不对乒乓球的规则进行修改,以降低乒乓球的旋转与速度。同时由于科技的发展,其他运动项目与日俱增,分走了一部分乒乓球参与者;生活条件的改善,人们从事竞技乒乓球运动的热情降低;兴奋剂的使用,使一些运动员远离竞技体育。
