In the Jin Dynasty (265-420), there was a great her- mit named Xie An. He possessed great talents but did not want to put them into the service for the court. Therefore, he rejected the invitation from the imperial court several times before ending his life as a hermit at the age of 40.
When he was living in Dongshan as a hermit, he went out with his friends, including Sun Chuo and Wang Xizhi, by ship to sail on the sea. Suddenly the strong wind came out, raising great waves on the sea and rolling the ship up and down. Sun Chuo and Wang Xizhi were scared so much that the color was drained away from their face. They all cried out, wanting to drive the ship back to the land. But Xie An was still calm and even excited. He recited his vers- es as usual. Seeing Xia An’s composure and comfort, the man steering the ship continued to drive the ship further away from the land.
A moment, the wind got stronger and raised the waves higher. People in the ship panicked and scurried around, crying and shouting, without any air of composure. Xia An calmly reminded them that “if you continued to run about aimlessly like this, the ship will overturn and we cannot go back home. So take your seat and wait calmly and silently till the wind is over.”
Accepting Xie An’s advices, people in the ship all returned to their seats. Later, the wind stopped and the sun came out. Feeling secured, Xia An’s friends all praised his calmness in front of the dangerous situation.
