In recent years, an extended segment display has appeared in the LED industry in order to make smaller LED chips into larger luminescent segments. Important features of such a display are: (1) segment uniformity, (2) viewing angle, (3) light output, and (4) price. This article describes a new design that shows significant advantages in all four dimensions. This design pays special attention to the problem of light scattering. The LED chip is placed at the bottom of the optical cavity and filled with epoxy to impregnate it. Epoxy resin mixed with glass shavings, which can become the light scattering center. Scattering occurs because the refractive index of the epoxy differs from that of the glass frit. Light is generated from the LED chips and then scattered, leaving the top surface of the cavity where the segments are drawn. (figure 1)
