克里米亚战争结束后,有一首诗歌在英国士兵中广为流传:“她毫不谋私,有着一颗纯正的心,为了受难的战士,她不惜奉献自己的生命。她为临终者祈祷,她给勇敢的人以平静。她知道战士们有着需要拯救的灵魂,伤员们热爱她,正如我们的所见所闻。她是我们的保卫者,她是我们的守护神!”诗歌中所指的“她”就是近代护理学的创立者、被称为第一位“白衣天使”的南丁格尔。
