故事梗概：《分手信》（Dear John）讲述的是：John在家乡的艳阳下、沙滩上，偶然结识正值花样年华的Savannah。Savannah，成长背景与John相去甚远，她单纯、善良、率真，有坚定的理念与信仰，有清楚而明确的目标。透过Savannah，John重新认识了自己，也重新认识了爱情。甜蜜的相处时光总是短暂，John必须回到军队，甚至被派驻海外。时间一天又一天地过去，这段靠书信维系、偶尔得以见上一面的远距离恋情，终因Savannah的一封分手信而划下句点。

(John goes back home after leaving a message to Savannah. While John and his father are having the Sunday dinner—

John: Looks like you’re gonna have 3)leftovers for one.
Dad: No. I’ll have it next Sunday.
John: Excuse me, Pop.
Savannah: ②Got your note. Short, sweet, to the point.
John: I’m sorry.
Savannah: John, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
John: No, I’m sorry.
Savannah: I didn’t…I didn’t mean to make you feel that way. I…I have no idea what I’m talking about. I have no business pretending I’m a doctor.
John: I was watching him today.
Savannah: John. Please. I’m serious. I don’t know what I’m talking about. I really don’t. It means nothing, okay? I’m headed back to school and I just wanted to make sure that, you know…
John: Make sure that what? Made you a promise, didn’t I?
Savannah: Yeah. You…you wrote your first note so I wrote mine. Don’t read it now. Wait till I’m gone.
John: Okay. Hey, can you…you hungry?
Savannah: Yes.
John: Yeah? My dad made a…made a little extra for you. You know, it’s Sunday.
Savannah: Okay. I can only stay for a little while.
John: I know. Come on.
Savannah: Dear John,
Two weeks together: that’s all it took. Two weeks for me to fall in love with you. Now, we have one year apart, but what’s one year apart after two weeks like that together?
John: Alright Pop, I got to go.
Dad: Okay.
John: You’ll be good, okay?
Dad: Okay. So.
John: Good.
Dad: Alright.
John: See you later.
Dad: Okay.
Savannah: You made me a promise, a promise I know you’ll keep, so I only want one more promise from you during this time we spend apart. Tell me everything. Write it all down, John, 4)scribble it in a notebook, type it out, e-mail it to me, I don’t care, but I want to know everything, and that way we’ll be with each other all the time even if we’re not with each other at all. That way, before we know it, I’ll see you soon, then.
(After the 911, John has to extend his tour in the army.)
Savannah: So you’re gonna 5)re-enlist, just like that?
John: It’s something we should talk about.
Savannah: Two more years, John. Have you already done it? Have you already re-upped yet?
John: No.
Savannah: But you’ve decided that you’re going to? ③Do I have a say? Do I have a say in this?
John: You don’t understand.
Savannah: Don’t ever tell me I don’t understand. (Savannah leaves. John follows her up.) Leave me alone, John. Please.
John: What do you…? What do you want from me…Savannah, I mean… just tell me what you want from me ’cause, I mean, you want me to quit? Is that it? Look, I don’t know how we got here. I don’t know what happened. I just woke up and, there’s a building falling and… I mean, I had a plan…I had a plan, but now I don’t and I have no idea what to do. I don’t know what to do an’ I just…all I know is I wanna stay here. I just want to stay right here with you as long as I possibly can. You’re just all that matters, okay, you’re all that matters to me, and don’t try to figure out what the right thing is to do and I don’t know what that is. I don’t have any freakin’ idea how to get there. I just…because I need you to tell me. I just need you to tell me, okay? (He hasn’t heard from Savannah for a long time; John finally gets a letter from Savannah, but it turns out to be a letter splitting up with him.)
Savannah: Dear John,
I know it’s been way too long since I last wrote you. I’ve been staring at this blank page for the last two hours. Well, if I’m being honest, I’ve been staring at it for the last two months. ④Please forgive me for what I’m about to say, and know that this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. My life without you has no meaning...

莎文娜：我不是有心让你难堪的。我不知道自己在胡说些什么，我又不是医生。
