Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. has developed a new technology that successfully suppresses the alkali-aggregate reaction that is the main cause of concrete deterioration. This technique adds inorganic ion exchangers to the concrete and suppresses the reaction by ion exchange and immobilization of the alkali metal so as to fundamentally prevent deterioration without the need for repairs. The specific development was to add various inhibitory candidate materials to the concrete made of readily borosilicate glass-reinforced concrete, and to analyze the expansion ratio of the rod-shaped test specimens (12-week material order). As a result, it was found that the addition of 3% yttria containing yttrium showed a swelling ratio of 0.009, which was a higher double-digit than that of synthetic zeolite materials.
