罗尔纲先生所著的忠王李秀成自传原稿笺证中,谈到忠王写自传的动机,他认为是‘企图用自传去打动曾力藩释放他,以恢复太平天国。’他的理由是:‘太平天国实力不但是完整的,而且是方兴未艾的。’‘忠王是太平军统帅,太平天国全军拥护他,广大人民拥护他,他跟捻军又有深远的联系。’因此,他认为,‘忠王采取伪降藉图复国,这一方式是适应他当时的客观情况的。’
