我国远在三代以前,即有关于应用科学上的许多发明。驰名于国外的磁针,火药,印刷术不过许多发明里面的一小部分,并不足以代表全面。例如,神农制造耒耜,蚩尤作五制兵,挥作弓,夷牟作矢等。都在上古的时候,墨翟作木鸢,诸葛亮作木牛流马,都是在中古以前。在古书上也不少的有关科学制造的简略记载,例如‘周礼’上说‘知者创物,巧者述之守之,世谓之工……烁金以为刃,凝土以为器,作车以行陆,作舟以行水……’,‘汉书’货殖传‘备物致用,立成器以为天下利……’都可以看出中国关于器物的创造早于东西各国。但是自从创造之后,进步是比较缓慢的,原因不外乎下列几种;(1)历
