1811年,法国人Bernard Courtois在进行从海藻灰提取硝酸钾的工作中发现所用铜锅被腐蚀,当液体中加入硫酸时则有黑色粉末沉淀出来。这些粉末经当时伟大的化学家Gay-Lussac研究后确定为一种新元素,命名为碘。1824年在法国正式开始用海藻灰制造碘,方法以后为欧洲沿海各国所采用。1862年于爪哇岛自石油井盐水中提取碘和1868年从南美智利硝石提碘成功以后,海藻灰制碘法即受到挫折。但现在还有一些国家如日本、法国、苏格兰等的一些地区仍以海藻灰为制碘的主要来源。
In 1811, French Bernard Courtois found that the copper pot used for the extraction of potassium nitrate from algae ash was corroded. When the liquid was added with sulfuric acid, black powder precipitated. These powders were identified as a new element by the then great chemist Gay-Lussac and named it iodine. In 1824, the seaweed ash was officially started to be used in France to manufacture iodine, which was later adopted by European coastal countries. The seaweed ash iodine method suffered setbacks in 1862 when iodine was extracted from oil well brine in Java Island and iodized salt from saltpeter in Chile in South America in 1868. However, there are still some countries such as Japan, France, Scotland and other parts of the seaweed ash is still the main source of iodine.
