空间技术中每一重大进程均是和遥控操作机构的研究新成果分不开的。遥控操作机构主要有两个方面,一是可伸展结构,一是遥控操作器(其中包括空间用的遥控机械手和机器人)。可伸展结构是把长度和质量比很大的,而且在飞行器发射时能贮藏起来的紧凑结构。例如;空间飞行器天线轴或天线构架(天线阵)、作为重力梯度稳定用的联结杆、飞行器的燃料输送管、宇宙飞行员在空间外出时的依附物、可折叠式的太阳帆板或大型太阳电池阵(包括空间太阳电能站)、卫星与空间探测器的连结结构、宇宙飞船船员通道
