据权威消息称:我国电大自1978年创建以来,已累计为国家培养输送本专科毕业生近300万人,中专毕业生110多万人;培训中小学教师200多万人次,中小学校长100多万人次,其他各类非学历教育结业3700多万人次,其办学规模稳居世界10所巨型开放大学之首。从1999年秋季开始,中央电大为适应社会经济发展对人才的迫切需要,又在全国范围内开展了“人才培养模式改革和开放教育试点”,先后开设了12个本科专业,17个专科专业,累计注册学生90多万人,成为电大抓住机遇,加快发展的一个新亮点。
