Religious economics is a relatively new area of research. This review has two purposes: first, reviewing and tracing the historical and sociological origins of the field; second, looking at the insights and research topics proposed by economists that can be used in the global religious studies of the modern world. The factors that influence religious economics are as follows: (1) recent developments in theoretical models, including the evolutionary model of religious markets’ spatial models and religious identities; (2) empirical studies that emphasize the causal impact of religious behavior for innovative metrological identification ; (3) new research on religious economic history that uses religion as an independent rather than a dependent variable; and (4) more religious studies outside the Western world. Based on these developments, this article will address four topics: first, secularization, pluralism, regulation and economic growth; second, religious markets, club goods, differentiated products and networks; and third, the recognition of secular competition and philanthropy Gifts, etc. Fourthly, conflicts and cooperation in developing societies. In the review of this ancient and thriving field, this article also put forward some questions to be studied for scholars to think.
