Regarding the diagnostic value of hyaluronic acid concentration in pleural effusion for pleural mesothelioma, there have been different opinions. Boersma et al. (1976) reported that hyaluronic acid was less than 20 μg/mL in the pleural fluid of 12 patients diagnosed with mesothelioma. Three cases of Friman et al. (1977) showed an increase in the acid concentration. The authors compared the concentrations of hyaluronic acid in diffuse mesothelioma, tuberculous, and cancerous pleural effusions to 7 μg/ml, 14±8.6 μg/ml, and 9.43±5.13 μg/ml, respectively, for patients with mesothelioma The amount of hyaluronic acid in the pleural fluid was not significantly different from that of non-mesotheliomas.
