On November 24th 2013, on the opening ceremony of the world science conference held in Rio DE janeiro, Brazil, the United Nations educational,scientific and cultural organization awarded UNESCO Kalinga Prize to Li Xiangyi who is the honorary president of the Association of Chinese Natural Science Museum, the science adviser of Beijing Municipal Government, China Science and Technology Museum curator,the former minister at science popularization department, the original director at Chinese Museum of Natural Science Association.
UNESCO Kalinga Prize
In 1952, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization set up a prize aiming to popular science – Kalinga Prize. It was founded by the Indian industrialist Pat Nike, it was named by Kalinga who is the Indian emperor in the 2nd century BC. Kalinga prize mainly reward people who have outstanding contributions in the popularization of science and technology, including scientist, journalist, educator and writer.
Li Xiangyi started his career in China Association for Science and Technology from 1983, it’s been 30 years. Many people know his lectures are very lively and interesting, we all like it. Li Xiangyi said, if people like to listen his lectures, he would love to give more lectures. For him, this is a pleasure. In his view, keeping learning something new is very important. Even he is 75 years old, he still keeps learning everyday. Li Xiangyi said, some people said that he is too old to study, but he thinks he has to learn something new because of the rapid development of popular science. Students like to listen his lecture, he can’t always teach the same thing, so it pushes him to study.
Li Xiangyi said, the most important characteristic about science is that it can contact with the public with zero distance and it is the reflection of social science communicators’ responsibilities and value.
