我九岁开始学戏,是在四维儿童训练班(后改名四维剧校)。初学老旦,后改小生,最后才归到旦行,青衣、花旦、武旦、刀马,什么都学,什么都唱。五年间,我大大小小唱过三、四十出戏。但是,那时学戏,都是为了即时演出,学得草率,很不严格。解放后,在正规的戏曲学校中学戏,才多少懂得了一点表演技巧。而真正受到严格训练,在表演艺术上有些进步,还是在拜了王瑶卿老师以后才开始的。
