苏州是全国重要的历史文化名城,著名的风景旅游城市,又是沿海经济开放区。改革开放14年来,苏州的经济建设迅猛发展,工农业总产值连续7年在全国大中城市仅次于上海、北京、天津,位居第四,精神文明建设也取得很大成绩。原有的四开四版苏州日报已越来越不适应形势发展的需要,苏州市委决定并经江苏省新闻出版局批准,从1993年1月1日起改出对开四版大报,日刊。
