rhEPO can increase athletes’ endurance by increasing the body’s red blood cell count and hemoglobin content, thereby increasing the maximum oxygen uptake. However, rhEPO abuse may cause great harm to the athletes. Although direct and indirect methods have been applied to the detection of rhEPO in the past 10 years, there is not an indirect indicator to achieve a satisfactory test result. At the Sydney Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee adopted a comprehensive blood test and urine test to detect rhEPO. In addition, some people may in the future adopt methods such as gene-stimulants to improve oxygen transport capacity.
