In the early mode period,fragmentary introductions to the Renaissance were made by the earliest missionaries to China,such as Matteo Ricci,Johann Adam and Ferdinand Verbiest,during the "Eastward dissemination of Weste leaing".However,as a holistic concept,it was introduced for the first time by Guo Shila (also translated as Guo Shili in Chinese,Karl Gützlaff,1803-1851),a German missionary,in his Easte Weste Monthly Magazine (1835),and also outlined in History of Europe (1884) edited by Joseph Edkins (1823-1905),a British missionary.Guo Songtao,the first diplomatic envoy of China,reviewed some anecdotes of cultural celebrities in Renaissance in his London and Paris Diary.After that,Chinese scholars including Yan Fu,Kang Youwei,Liang Qichao,Hu Shi and Cai Yuanpei,all discussed the significance of the Renaissance in brief.The History of Renaissance (published by The Commercial Press in 1921) by Jiang Fangzhen (Jiang Baili) and The Brief History of the Renaissance (published by The Commercial Press in 1926) by Chen Hengzhe were enlightening.
