Over sixty years ago,when the People’s Republic of China was established,Byzantine history (拜占庭史) was rarely touched upon by Chinese scholars.Now Byzantine studies have developed into a significant area of research in China.There are approximately one hundred scholars who specialize in Byzantine studies and ten universities which offer masters and doctoral programs on Byzantine history.Around a hundred articles and several books on Byzantine history are published each year.
