钢、铝、不锈钢、铜等制品的表面研磨和表面抛光,过去常用砂纸、砂布、布轮、绢丝轮等工具材料进行。六十年代以来,国外发展了一种纤维状研磨材料,广泛用于抛磨、丝纹处理、除污、除锈等,使传统工艺得到了改革。发展也很快,如美国,1976午用作研磨材料的无纺布年产值达1500万美元;日本在这一年消耗于研磨无纺布的纤维量也达800吨以上。目前国内亦有研制和试用,样品已接近或赶上国外同类产品的水平。如北京砂轮厂生产的纤维抛光片,郑州磨料磨具磨削研究所的孕砂维纶纱筋轮,吉林化纤技术研究所的孕砂维纶纤维等。
