The impact of pre-cracked Charpy V-shaped specimens by an instrument is an economical method for the determination of dynamic fracture toughness K1d. Measurements were made with A-533 steel at a load range of K ° ≈10 to 6 ksi / hr (3/2) seconds over a temperature range of -125 to 75 ° F. This data was found to be consistent with the data obtained by other workers on a much larger sample. Data analysis leads to a new approach for estimating NDT. This method has practical value in nuclear reactor monitoring.
