现在,日本陆上自卫队装备的最新型坦克是90式主战坦克。该坦克定型于1990年,其技 术水平可谓在西方发达国家主战坦克中属于比较先进的。尤其是该坦克的火控系统和行动机构, 确实能称得上是世界水平的先进技术。但是,需要改进的地方也不少,如改装长炮管火炮,增 强装甲防护力和采用信息化的通信装置等。通过这些改进,这种坦克还可以再服役20年时间。 但日本并没有这样做,而是开展了90式坦克的后继新型坦克的研制。
