自2007年中国观赏石协会相继组织开展“中国观赏石之乡(城)”及“中国观赏石基地”的评审工作以来,已先后评选出1 7个“中国观赏石之乡(城)”和3个“中国观赏石基地”中国观赏石之乡(城)和基地的评审及授予,为促进观赏石资源的合理开发、利用与保护,科学有序地探采、收藏和交易,确保观赏石资源的可持续发展,促进地方经济、文化、社会的和谐发展,普及观赏石基础知识,开展理论研究和人员培训,展览展示、鉴评鉴赏、赏石文化交流,构建赏石交易和拍卖等活动的固定场所和现实平台等方面发挥了积极而重要的作用。
