Now for mothers who will have blood-borne disease, they are told that their future child will be sick for 10 weeks of their pregnancy. This significant advance in prenatal diagnosis has been achieved by the successful combination of new and old diagnostic techniques. The old technique used was to analyze the DNA taken from the fetus so that the doctor could diagnose hematologic disorders. This technique has been improved by Dr. John Uld and David Weatherall at Oxford University. The new technique used is a completely new method of fetching fetal cells from the mother’s uterus during the earliest stages of pregnancy. This method was invented by Dr. Bernadette Modell and Hu-mphry Ward at the University of London School of Medicine.
