距今大约一百二十年前,一名男婴在美国康涅狄格州哈特福德市的一个家庭里诞生了。当时,父亲把刚刚降生人世的婴儿放在自己面前,制订了一个异乎寻常的大胆的教育计划。这个计划的内容是这样的:在家庭中,父亲只讲英语,母亲只操法语,祖父只用德语说话,另外还特意雇来一名北欧妇女作保姆,让她只说本国的语言。除这四种语言外,其它语言绝对禁止使用,以此来培养这个男孩。男孩长大后到外面玩要,接触了左邻右舍。他感到非常惊讶,怎么别的孩子都只说父亲讲的语言(英语),原来这个孩子一直以为,每个人都用不同语言讲话是普遍现象。
