Many vicious conflicts actually take place between extremists of different civilizations rather than between the vast majority of people of different civilizations. After the Cold War ended, as the international bipolar balance was broken and the various forces redistributed and reorganized as a result, ethnic and religious conflicts that were masked by the bipolar confrontation and the “Cold War fog” for some time suddenly appeared on a global scale. The so-called “theory of clash of civilizations” by Professor Samuel Huntington was promulgated on such a grand occasion. Its central thesis is: In the future, the development of international politics will be dominated by conflicts in civilization. The “September 11” incident has intensified the antagonism between the West and the Islamic world.
