关公生前最高的职位是将军。汉献帝建安四年(199),关公在许都被封为中郎将;建安五年(200),关公随曹操二进许都,被拜为偏将军,后解白马之围有功,表封为汉寿亭侯;建安十四年(209),刘备拜关公为荡寇将军、襄阳太守;建安二十四年(219),被刘备拜为前将军,位列“五虎上将”之首。关公成王成帝成圣,是因为关公故事在民间千年传颂;是因为千百万民众对关公道德精神的崇尚;是因为儒佛道诸教敬奉关公为本教之神灵;更因为历朝皇帝借助关公之忠义思想教化臣民,一次又一次地追封关公。从而,共同创造出一位中华民族“忠义仁勇诚信”的道德偶像。儒佛道三教共敬关公从三国到隋初,人们一直把关公视为盖世英雄。把他作为神灵礼拜,始于隋朝。东汉初年传入中国的佛教,与传统的儒家思想及道教文化在激烈的碰撞中趋向融合,逐步演变成了中国化的佛
