明人喜作世说体笔记小说,尤喜以当朝人士为对象采摭成书,如《玉堂丛话》、《皇明世说新语》、《玉剑尊闻》等皆是,影响所及,清初尚有其流风余韵在。只是易代之感、黍离之思,使得当时作者已乏前代作品之轻扬飘逸,而平添了几分厚重沉郁。在内容上,除了对前贤一如既往的推尊,又多出对先烈的缅怀、对奸佞的贬抑和对遗民的称许。皖南宣城吴肃公的《明语林》,便是这样的世说体著作。
