Submarine cable systems using long-wavelength single-mode fiber are expected to achieve economical long-distance digital transmission. This article describes the recent research and development of undersea fiber optic cables for international communications at the KDD Research and Development Laboratory. We developed an experimental model that includes fiber optic cables and repeaters. In November 1981, a 1.3-m, 280-Mbit / s test repeater was laid on the 1500-meter-deep sea floor and its basic characteristics were tested. By the end of 1981 it has been possible to test-produce a single long fiber optic cable of up to 30 kilometers in length. In early June 1982, a test system with a length of 50 km and two repeaters at a wavelength of 1.3 μm and a bit rate of 300 Mbit / s was laid in a loop. The system is routing the beginning and ending in the Yawata wild sea cable land station into the Sagami Bay around a big loop, and back to the starting point.
