江口县栗资源有三个种八个类型。板栗有大粒型油板栗、小粒型油板栗、大粒型灰板栗、小粒型灰板栗和独板栗等五个类型;锥栗有大粒型锥栗和小粒型锥栗两个类型;茅栗只有一种类型。其中以板栗分布最广泛,数量最大,占总产量的90％以上。其次为锥栗,茅栗只有零星分布。江口县板栗主要分布在海拔600～900m,年均温14.5～15.5℃,森林覆盖率大的温凉湿山区和半山区、碳酸盐岩和变质岩发育而来的土壤上。
