A team of professors at the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Agriculture’s Beppu Huiyan and others found a new substance called actinomycin B that selectively kills only cancer cells. The new substance has the same anti-cancer effect as conventional anti-cancer agents, and has little destructive effect on normal cells. This feature has been confirmed by animal experiments and is expected to become a novel anticancer agent without side effects. The raw material for making this new substance is an actinomycete, from which substances that cause abnormal changes in the shape of the mold are extracted. Professor Beppu has discovered in his class of actinomycetes tricalatinA that selectively kills only cancer cells. However, this substance has not been confirmed by animal experiments.
