喜马拉雅山脉包含着珠穆朗玛峰等数百座世界上最高的山峰,“喜马拉雅”这个名字来自梵文,意思是“冰雪之乡”。但是喜马拉雅山的大部分高耸的山峰都曾经是太阳照射下泛着粼粼波光的海洋。这是地质学家早就证实了的,但最近一项发表在《美国地质学会通报》上的研究成果则强调了沧海桑田的过程,论文的第一作者、休斯敦大学的苏哈勃·科韩说:“事实上,这些小岛就位于现在的山脉的边缘,因此你可以从岩床走到这些小岛的海底沉积物上,这种现象令人难以置信。”
