巴林左旗位于内蒙古自治区东南部、赤峰市北部。这里曾是大辽国的皇都,其二百余年的辉煌历史留下了独具魅力的丰富历史文化遗存。林东城南有辽上京古城遗址,城内有石雕观音像一躯,古城址南北各有辽塔一座。林东西北25公里处有辽代祖州、祖陵遗址,辽代著名的液泉、黎谷就在此地。林东正南的桃石山下,有辽代石窟寺——真寂之寺,它是辽朝二百年间最具影响的佛寺,是我国保存最好的一处辽代石窟寺。巴林左旗境内各个时期文化遗存514处,辽上京博物馆收藏着新石器时代“红山文化”“富河文化”遗存和辽代历史文物15000件
