The character of Mr. Principal, in a “declaration” of Ye Shengtao, appears to be an old-fashioned intellectual and not a politically active figure. He is neither a progressive activist in participating in the anti-Japanese activities nor a slave who has voluntarily been an accomplice in the reactionary government. He seems to be indifferent to the Japanese people and the reactionary government. What he cares about is the social status of his high school principal, who is also a profession. At a time when the anti-Japanese movement was high and the reactionary government suppressed the situation very tightly, he had no ideals and no plans to keep his social status.
