太平洋毗邻我国,位于亚洲和澳洲大陆之东,南、北美洲以西,南部与南极洲接壤。太平洋是世界上面积最大、水深最深的大洋,其面积达179679000平方公里,占地球表面总面积的三分之一以上,比地球上所有大陆和岛屿的总面积还要大。太平洋的平均水深为4028米,最深的地方不在它的中央,而是在周围的海沟地区。太平洋有19条海沟,最深的是马利亚纳海沟,最大水深达11022米。 很久以来,人们对太平洋进行了长期、大量的调查研究。概括起来,大致可分为三个时期。
