This painting shows sadness, compassion and loss. The picture is beautiful and extraordinary, rich colors, vivid details and is a masterpiece. The painting is named “Return to the Sea” (oil on canvas, 50.8 cm x 65.4 cm, 1862. See the back cover of this issue), based on Arthur Hughes earlier work “The Tomb of Mother” (1857) . [2] In this painting, a boy cried in front of his mother’s grave. The boy apparently just returned from the sea following the fleet, and it appeared that his mother died during his sea-going. His sister sat aside, unable to comfort. The gentle expression of the girl did not seem extremely sad, but the whole picture was passed deep pain. Another notable detail is the lamb standing behind the tombstone in the background, a symbol of the child separated from the parents (the sheep on the left side of the screen) by that tomb.
