英国电信公司已成功地铺设了世界上第一条海底单模光缆。光缆长23 km,连接朴茨茅斯和赖德,穿过索伦特海域,传输电话和数据。该光缆无需增音器就能在怀特岛开设数据、文字、图片和图表的往返传送业务。它不但能够降低传输成本,还能提高与该岛通讯的可靠性。这段光缆包含四对光纤。最初使用三对,两对工作,另一对备用。每对光纤可在1.3μm以每秒140Mbit 的速率传送信息,即同时可容纳2千路电话或者相当数
BT has successfully deployed the world’s first underwater single mode fiber optic cable. Cable 23 km long, connecting Portsmouth and Ryder, through the sea of Sorrento, transmission of telephone and data. The cable can be set up on the Isle of Wight to send and receive data, text, pictures and charts without the need for a loudspeaker. Not only does it reduce transmission costs, it also increases the reliability of communications with the island. This cable contains four pairs of optical fibers. The first three pairs, two pairs of work, the other pair of spare. Each pair of fibers can transmit information at a rate of 140 Mbits per second at 1.3 μm, which can accommodate up to 2 thousand telephones or equivalent
