Activated carbon and resin hemoperfusion on the efficacy of hepatic encephalopathy is still not very sure. In 1982, Schafer and Jones proposed the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) hypothesis regarding the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy, suggesting that elevated blood GABA concentrations play an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy.
