Since the establishment of the Department of Systems Engineering at the Northeastern Institute of Technology in London in September 1970, contacts have been made with a number of engineering schools and universities in the light of their concern for systems engineering. We soon learned that the British thinking in the field of systems engineering is still at a relatively early stage, except that the United States has made considerable progress in this regard. The author has twice visited the United States in order to get a comprehensive picture of Systematic Education in the United States and hopes to draw lessons from problems that may arise after setting up such a course in the UK. From the two inspection visits, what kind of subject was systematically captured in the overall impression of systematic engineering in the United States? This impression is hoped to be fully expressed in the introduction of several visiting units below. From published articles or visits to universities, it is clear that systematic engineering in the United States is now officially identified as a specialized discipline. Systematic education may be slow to begin as an independent discipline, perhaps because of the difficulty of defining the term “system.” Systematic doctrine described here, for the purposes of this article, includes Systems Engineering, Systems Science and Cybernetics. The earliest universities offering specialty programs were the University of Pennsylvania (1953) and the University of Arizona (1959). These courses are basically graduate students
