The field of language teaching and learning has undergone tremendouschanges over the last fifty years.It has evolved from a mono-disciplinary into a multi-disciplinary fieldof study.As an inter-disciplinary subjectit benefits from researchfindings from other disciplines as well as contributes to the furtherdevelopment of them.Among them the most important ones are linquistics,psychology and pedagogy.It has also experienced a shift in focus,from the objects in studyto the subj ects in study.objects include the language,teachingmaterials and teachingmethods/approaches while subj ects are thelanguage learners.Research On successful languaqe learners has sofar identified the following factors:intelligence,language aptitude,Characters,cognitive styles,learning strateqies,motivation andinterest.And the importance of language learning strateqies researchhas been acknowledged by more and more researchers.CAI(computer aided instruction)is an important application ofcomputer technology.With the advancement of information technology.CALL (computer-asSisted language learning)has opened up new spacefor further research on language teaching and learnina.Based on research findings across the discipline areas of languagelearning and CALL studies,and with the incorporation of researchresults from case studies on ESL studentsuse of language learningstrategies in a CALL context,this study illustrates the findinas onadvantageous and disadvantageous aspects of CALL and proposes waysto enhance such a learning environment,It is believed that theinformation from this study will enrich our understandings of thenature of second language learning with the use of computingtechnology.
